Koh Tao is easily accessible from either the mainland port towns of Chumphon and Surat Thani, or the holiday destination of KohSamui via high speed Catamarans. It has become one of the ‘must do’ things on traveller’s itineraries when they visit the Land of Smiles.
Koh Tao is only about 21 sq Km and is located about 70 km from the mainland and roughly 45km from Koh Samui.
The community in Koh Tao was settled for the first time in 1947 when the villagers from Koh Samui and Koh Phangan immigrated and settled in what is now known as Sairee Beach. Using the land for coconut plantations and the waters around, for a small fishery selling their catch back to the mainland folk. Beforehand, It was used as a political prison from 1933 – 1945.
During the past 15 years, the reputation of Koh Tao’s natural beauty, especially its marine life and coral reefs, has seen an increase in the number of eager participates in the numerous diving programs offered here. Due to the island’s distance from the mouth of Mae Nam Tapi, (River), Koh Tao offers high visibility and an abundance of marine life pretty much year round. One of the reasons it has became one of the major dive sites of South East Asia.
Over the last 20 years, since the first travellers discovered Koh Tao and with their special backpacker networks, quickly made it a widely known and a must see destination. So much so, thatin 2010, it was voted #3 by The Times newspaper in the Top 10 places to visit!!!
